Guided Reading

We do guided reading for half an hour every day. Guided reading alternates between whole class comprehension based activities and individual group reading. There are five guided reading groups  and over the course of the week, each group will read at least once with the teacher and teaching assistant. 

Individual Reading

All children are given three individual books to take home:

- A Rhino Readers book which aligns with the pupils' phonics level according to the Twinkl Phonics scheme.

- A colour-coded book which aligns with the pupils' reading level according to Benchmarking.

- A library book which is chosen by the pupil to read for pleasure.

We encourage parents to read with their child at least three times a day. Points can be earned for daily reading at home. Books are changed on a Monday or when a child moves up a reading level. 

Story Time

Sutherland aims to foster a love of reading in all children as well as skill. Story time takes place every day (usually at the end of the day). Children are welcome to bring in their own books to be read as a class.
