Phonics 📚

In Year 2, we will continue to build on the strong phonics foundations developed in Year 1. The children completed their Phonics Screening Check in Year 1, and this year we will continue our phonics programme by working through Level 6.

We will learn and practise new spelling patterns and alternative ways of representing sounds, while continuing to develop the skills needed to read unfamiliar words confidently and accurately. We will regularly revisit and recap sounds and graphemes from Year 1 to ensure that these remain secure and automatic.

Alongside our daily phonics sessions, we will apply our knowledge when reading and spelling, helping the children to become increasingly fluent, confident and independent readers and writers.

We follow the Twinkl Phonics Scheme in our school. The children are taught in levels from 1-6 and begin the programme from nursery. They work through the different levels during daily lessons up to the end of year 2. They learn more than 40 sounds that help them to blend and segment words which supports their early reading progression. In addition the children are sent home with a Rhino reading book which is phonetically decodable and matched to their phonic ability. 

Spellings ✏️

In Year 2, we will continue to develop the children’s spelling skills alongside their phonics learning. We will be following the Twinkl Phonics Year 2 spelling programme, with children learning and practising the spelling patterns, common exception words and vocabulary appropriate for their level.

Each week, the children will bring home a set of spellings to practise, and we will have a weekly spelling test to help us monitor their progress and identify any areas that may need further practice.

Regular opportunities to revisit previous sounds and spelling patterns will help children to become more confident and accurate spellers.
