Phonics Screening Check – June

In June, our Year 1 children will take part in the Phonics Screening Check.

This is a short, gentle check to see how well children are learning their phonics and using them in reading. It is done one-to-one with a familiar adult in a relaxed and supportive setting.

Children will read a small number of real and “alien” (made-up) words to show how they can use their phonics skills.

We have given your children a personalised key ring, filled with the sounds that we would like them to work on with you at home. Please could this be returned every day so that we can continue to work on this in school too?

We follow the Twinkl Phonics Scheme in our school. The children are taught in levels from 1-6 and begin the programme from nursery. They work through the different levels during daily lessons up to the end of year 2. They learn more than 40 sounds that help them to blend and segment words which supports their early reading progression. In addition the children are sent home with a Rhino reading book which is phonetically decodable and matched to their phonic ability. 

Update January 2026

We will no longer be having weekly spelling tests. Instead, we will integrate the words sent home throughout the week in phonics lessons. We feel this is more beneficial to the children. Please work through the words sent home with your children; this could be in writing, or glitter, chalk, however you please!
