Welcome to 5G's class page!

Our class teacher is Mrs Misselbrook and we are helped in our learning by Miss Ratcliffe.

Thanks for stopping by and having a look at our page which will inform you about many of the exciting things that are going on in our classroom and what we are learning about.

Please see below for any important parental information and electronic copies of letters, homework and spelling lists.

We will be updating the page regularly so please come again soon!

Spring Term Curriculum

Our topic this term is World War 2 and its effect on Stoke on Trent. During this topic, we will be learning about:

  • Learning about the countries and key historical figures who were involved in World War 2
  • How the war started, its effects on Britain (particularly Stoke on Trent)
  • Learning about evacuation and its impacts on children and families (particularly in Stoke on Trent)
  • Exploring what propaganda is and how it was used in World War 2

In science this term, we are continuing our final unit of learning about the properties of materials. We are looking forward to lots of investigations and practical work during this topic!

We will then be moving on to learning about Forces.

During the Spring term, we will be starting our new MFL Spanish topic. We are looking forward to getting familiar with the Spanish language over the coming months.

Important information

P.E. days

5G have their PE lessons on a Monday and a Friday.

Clean PE kits should be brought in to school on a Monday morning and will be sent home for a wash on a Friday. It is essential that the kit is in school all through the week (even on non-PE days) as our timetable can sometimes change at short notice. Please see the Sutherland Primary Academy uniform policy for further guidance on PE kit items.

Spellings and Homework

Reading is incredibly important to your child's development. Once they have been assessed, children at Sutherland each have a banded reading book. Each time they read at home and get their diary signed by an adult, they are able to earn tokens which they can collect and convert in to additional Golden Stamps! If you would like any advice on questions that you could ask your child or books, please speak to Mrs Misselbrook.

Golden homework is another great way to earn extra Golden Stamps! Homework tasks are handed out at the start of every term and the number of Golden Stamps is shown for each homework task. Children can earn a higher number of Golden Stamps for homework that is completed to a fantastic standard. Our current homework tasks can be found via the Spellings and homework tab  above.

Maths homework: This can vary from one to two pieces a week, and supplements learning during that week's unit. We strongly encourage children to complete this task on a weekly basis.

Spellings are handed out at the start of each term in a booklet containing each week’s word list. These can be found via the Spellings and homework tab. Spelling tests take place each Friday and we have a competition between the Year 5 classes to see which class can get the highest average score. Come on 5G!

Thank you in advance, to all of the parents who actively support and encourage their children in reading and completing their homework- it will make such a difference to their progress.
