Sutherland Primary Academy follows the Twinkl Phonics scheme. The children are taught in levels (from level 2 to level 6) from Monday to Thursday. Each level, except level 4, has a set of sounds. These sounds are accompanied by actions to help the children remember them. Level 4 introduces blending and segmenting learnt sounds to decode words. In addition, each child is sent home with a Rhino Readers book that is matched to their phonics level and is thus phonetically decodable. 

The weekly spelling test takes place on Friday with spellings sent home the week before.

Please ensure you regularly practice phonics with your child at home! The nationwide phonics screening tests will take place in June 2024.
