Guided Reading

We do guided reading for half an hour every day. Guided reading alternates between whole class comprehension based activities and individual group reading. There are five guided reading groups (Smarty Pants, Clever Cookies, Genius Gems, Super Stars and Whizz Kids) and over the course of the week, each group will read at least twice with the teacher and teaching assistant. 

Individual Reading

All children are given an individual book to take home. We encourage parents to read with their child every day. Golden points can be earned for daily reading at home. Books are changed after being read three times, whether that is the books we send home or a different book from home. The children will have two reading books and a library book to take home. One is a phonics reading book using the Rhino  Reader scheme as part of our Twinkl phonics programme taught in school and the other is a banded book given from assessments in class using an age related screening tool.

Story Time

Sutherland aims to foster a love of reading in all children as well as skill. Story time takes place every day (usually at the end of the day). Children are welcome to bring in their own books to be read as a class.

Children also have the opportunity to visit the landing library at lunchtimes and choose a book of their choice to take home. Year 1 library days are Mondays and Thursdays.
