Reading Sessions

Each week, the children take part in reading sessions in small groups. They read books that are carefully chosen to match their current reading ability, allowing them to develop their skills and confidence at an appropriate level.

During each session, an adult works closely with the group, focusing on three key areas:

• Decoding – using phonics and other strategies to read unfamiliar words.
• Prosody – developing expression, pace and intonation when reading.
• Comprehension – understanding, discussing and responding to what they have read.

Our aim is for all children to become confident and fluent readers.
 

To help develop fluency, the children read the same book three times in school during the week. The book will then come home so that you can read it again with your child. Re-reading a familiar book helps children to build confidence, improve their fluency and develop expressive reading.
 

Please return the reading book to school every Monday. The children will then begin the following week with a new book for their reading session.

Interest Books

All children have the opportunity to choose an interest book to bring home and share with an adult. The aim is for children to enjoy listening to stories and developing a love of books, while spending valuable time reading together with an adult.

Interest books can be changed each week, allowing children to explore a variety of stories, topics and authors based on their interests.

We encourage you to enjoy sharing both their interest book, and their Rhino Readers book, with your child and make reading together a fun and enjoyable part of their week.

Story Time

Sutherland aims to foster a love of reading in all children as well as skill. Story time takes place every day (usually at the end of the day). Children are welcome to bring in their own books to be read as a class.

Children also have the opportunity to visit the landing library at lunchtimes and choose a book of their choice to take home.
